War Memorial Stone Restoration for Loughton Town Council

21 September, 2022

USL team of specialist stone masons have recently completed conservation and repair works for Loughton Town Council on Traps Hill.

The war memorial commemorating both World War I & II was  showing signs of visible discolouration from pollution build up. Along with other historical fractures, chipps, damage and repairs.  The inscribed letter cut plinth stones were becoming unreadable and carvings became friable due to exposure.  USL are pleased to have carried out this sensitive conservation work.

Our team carried out the following repair works;

  • Complete cleaning process with DOFF system
  • All joints and paving repointed
  • Restoration of treads, realignment and refixing
  • Cutting out of damaged stone areas and manufacturing new replacements in Portland stone
  • Creation of new inscription sections by hand in Portland stone letter cut panels to match existing.
  • Sensitive hand carving on friable panels

Below we are pleased to showcase a few finished photos as well as the preworks condition.
