Reactive works – USL team secure the safety of a large catholic church in Cambridge- The Church of Our Lady and the English Martyrs (OLEM).

USL were pleased to respond quickly to help secure the safety of The Church of Our Lady and the English Martyrs (OLEM) on Hills Road in Cambridge.  A recent report outlined that the structure posed a "potential danger to the public on the pavement below".

Conservation specialists at USL were able to provide urgent advice and assistance with high-level access survey the tower and spire (65-metre height) of the church and carry out a full inspection of stone elements at the parapet wall level whilst removing any loose stonework.  The team inspected each pinnacle and element for integrity and visible deterioration.

Upon emergency inspection, the best course of action was to deconstruct the dangerous elements and bring them down to ground level.  The works were swiftly executed to ensure the reopening of the closed road for the public and on behalf of the Roman Catholic Diocese of East Anglia.

Our emergency and reactive services:

Every church building and its grounds needs to have a Quinquennial Inspection (QI). A QI is a five-yearly look at the church building to see what condition it is in and to set out what repairs are needed. These reports highlight works which are urgent and need to be done immediately and those which can wait a little longer but will need attention.  Periodically, churches require additional attention to help identify issues and carry out reactive and emergency works.
