USL Lights Up the Oldest Town Wall in Britain

09 March, 2020

USL are pleased to announce that on March 5th, the installation of LED lighting along a 250-metre stretch of the Roman Wall at Balkerne Hill was completed, lighting up the oldest town wall in Britain at night.

This section of the wall extends to the north and south of Balkerne Gate and will be lit from dusk until 11pm each night, on a permanent basis as part of the 'Better Colchester' campaign.

It follows the recent USL installation of new LED colour-change lighting at Colchester Castle, last month, showcasing the largest Norman keep in Europe in all its glory after dark. Both projects are committed to showcasing the towns rich heritage for residents and visitors.

Cllr Julie Young, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Performance and Deputy Leader of the Council, said: “Celebrating our heritage and making Colchester even more inviting is a key part of our Better Colchester campaign, and these two fantastic lighting schemes do just that.

“I am thrilled with the lighting and how it showcases our wonderful heritage, and I hope residents and visitors enjoy seeing them highlighted in this way too.”

Cllr Mark Cory, Leader of Colchester Borough Council, added: “We are really committed to celebrating our heritage and this new lighting shows off two of our most prominent pieces of heritage lit up after dark. This is just one of many Better Colchester projects around the town and borough, shining a light on the wonderful assets Colchester has to offer.”

The Better Colchester campaign sets out to make Colchester an even more attractive place to live, work and visit. USL were pleased to work on this special lighting installation project in partnership with Colchester Borough Council.
