Sanctuary Transformation Begins at Tyburn Convent

Universal Stone Limited is pleased to announce its appointment to the Tyburn Convent Sanctuary Renovation in London, a significant heritage and ecclesiastical project set within one of the capital’s most spiritually and historically important sites.

Set in the heart of London, Tyburn Convent stands near the historic Tyburn Gallows. Today, it is home to a cloistered Benedictine community devoted to prayer under the Rule of St Benedict. The chapel lies at the centre of convent life, comprising the sanctuary, choir, and tribune, spaces now set to undergo sensitive and transformative renewal.

Working in partnership with Pelican Architecture & Design (P-AD), USL will deliver a carefully considered programme of reordering works to the chapel, with a particular focus on the sanctuary.

The project is focused on the creation of a stunning, grand and beautifully crafted new main altar and reredos, designed to enhance the sacred setting while respecting the convent’s liturgical and architectural heritage.  The works will also include bespoke stone and timber elements, conservation of existing features, and the integration of new liturgical furniture.

The project is now underway and encompasses specialist design, manufacture, and installation of the new stone altar and timber reredos, careful adaptation and restoration of existing pews and furnishings, sanctuary reordering works including flooring and terrazzo, and the integration of bespoke joinery, railings, and architectural features.

All works will be delivered with a sensitive, phased approach to respect the ongoing life and operation of the convent.
