Bespoke Lifting Equipment & Dismantling
At St Clement Danes, the USL team continues the dismantling process. We are pleased to share a few interesting photos and viewpoints from the Strand’s iconic spire. We have currently dismantled two-thirds of the spire utilising our bespoke lifting arrangement.
This unique design solution was developed inhouse by USL and our supply chain partners Interfix Scaffolding and scaffold designers Tubular Techniques Ltd. The lifting equipment enables our hoist to be manoeuvred in both planes, so that the team may always locate the lifting hook centrally above each stone. This allows for a quicker, efficient and most importantly, safer method of dismantling and eventual rebuilding of the masonry compared to traditional methods.
The stonework is being conserved and repaired offsite by USL stone masons prior to being place in store, ready for rebuilding later on in the year.

The programme of essential works will include stone dismantling, off-site stone cleaning and repairs, stone production and replacement, stone rebuilding and associated works to lead coverings, railings and weathervane. The rebuilding of the steeple will see each element reinstated in its exact initial position so as to not deviate from the original design.
USL is pleased to be collaborating with St Clement Danes, the RAF, Stace LLP, Sheppard Architects and Hurst Peirce + Malcolm LLP on this collaborative restoration of the steeple to ensure the protection and preservation of this historic church for future generations.
