Christ Church Kensington Tower Restoration: Specialist Stone Masonry Delivered with Confidence

Universal Stone Limited is proud to feature in Premier Construction Issue 36 for our specialist stone masonry and conservation works at Christ Church, Kensington.

This Grade II listed Victorian church received urgent restoration to its tower, spire and chancel gable, combining traditional craftsmanship with robust technical delivery.

Project Overview

Our team completed a major stone masonry and conservation package shaped by a detailed inspection and drone survey before site operations began in October 2024.

Working in close partnership with Art Architects and Structural Engineer Morton Partnership, we delivered a comprehensive programme of repairs, including:

• Carefully matched stone replacements
• Lime mortar repointing and stone consolidation
• Restoration of key architectural details

Key Restoration Works

Among the standout elements of the scheme were:

• Renewal of the tower cornice
• Reinstatement of carved corner figures, believed to reflect the original four-winged Evangelist figures
• Installation of a new stone cross to the chancel gable

These decorative and structural masonry works were supported by:

• Full lime mortar repointing
• Stone consolidation
• Internal cleaning
• Bell chamber clearance
• Bird guard replacement and repairs to lightning protection fixings
