USL is pleased to have worked on the restoration of this beautiful Grade I Listed church on West Mersea Island in Essex.  The historic Church of St Peter and St Paul has been at the centre of this close-knit community since the 7th Century.

Interesting Fact:  St. Cedd founded his monastery in Bradwell circa 654 and built historic St.Peter’s chapel on the Bradwell Peninsula out of the remains of the Roman fort of Othona. From this idyllic location he evangelised Essex, the kingdom of the East Saxons.

Our USL team of specialists have been carrying out vital fabric repairs to the exterior of the church and tracery elements.

External Fabric Restoration included;

  • Renewed various elements of stone tracery, jambs, mullions and hood moulds to four belfry windows.
  • Stone used included Kentish ragstone, Portland and Clipsham Limestones.
  •  Our inhouse masons worked pieces by hand and installed.
  • The works also involved consolidation by micro pinning, lime mortar repairs and shelter-coating to the original ragstone as well as more recent limestone dressings.
  • The north clock face was repainted and gilded.
  • The works presented numerous challenges such as completing the works before the influx of bats and dealing with the very windy conditions as found near the sea and water’s edge.
