Appointed as Principal Contractor, USL were pleased to carry out the repairs and renewal of the main roofs including Nave, Chancel and North Transept and high level stonework at the Grade II listed Church of St Hilda in London.

Restoration works included;

  • Design and erection of scaffolding
  • Strip existing slate to roofs and recover with salvaged slates and new Westmoreland slates, laid in diminishing courses including new felt, battens and counterbattens.
  • Introduction of insulation to the roof
  • Renewal of all lead flashings and gutters
  • Removal of existing lead covering to Tower roof and replacement in new code 7 lead with code 5 lead flashings
  • Overhaul and renewal of rainwater goods
  • Repairs and replacement to high level masonry and brickwork
  •  Repairs to selected windows

All masonry repairs were carried out by our own team of experienced and highly skilled masons with all dressed and moulded stones being worked by our in house team of banker masons at our Essex Workshop.

The project was successfully completed with minimal disruption to the church which remained open throughout the project.
