USL was appointed as Principal Contractor to carry out extensive restoration works to the roof and associated areas at St Edmundsbury Cathedral.

The cathedral lies at the heart of a complex of historic buildings in the centre of Bury St Edmunds. Beside it to one side is the Norman Tower, an early 12th-century free-standing tower which acts a bell-tower for the cathedral.

The restoration programme included; design and installation of scaffolding including provision of a temporary roof, internal scaffolding and crash deck, renewal to roof leadwork and flashing, restoration of rainwater goods, restoration of roof boarding and timbers, restoration of stonework, reconstruction of North Aisle parapet to increase height as well as stone restoration to damaged internal plaster and parapet stringcourse.

All stone masonry repairs were carried out by USL’s specialist team of banker masons including all dressed and moulded stones.  USL carried out all works whilst the cathedral remained opened to the public.
