USL were pleased to work as the principal contractor at the Georgian London Church St Botolph without Aldersgate in Barbican.  In partnership with Edwards Wilson, our restoration teams carried out internal work-at-height to restore and repair masonry and plasterwork, window restoration, and internal redecoration. This Georgian building boasts an elaborate detailed ceiling and impressive stained-glass windows. The external programme included repairs to the tower section, cupola, and roofing.

This was one of four medieval London churches dedicated to Botolph, or Botwulf, a 7th-century East Anglian saint.

Internal works included:

  • Repairs to internal walls and ceilings such as repairing cracks, repointing and making good.
  • Repairs, waterproofing treatment, and re-plastering to accessible WC.
  • Full redecoration of north and south aisles at ground, gallery and ceiling levels. Removal of loose flaking paint, repairs and redecoration.
  • Full redecoration with colour match to all areas, lobby, staircases, chancel, gallery and aisles.
  • Joinery and timber repairs to cracks and cleaning.

External works included;

  • Works to nave roof including redecoration of timber cornice.
  • Improvements to roof access including handrails and lighting.
  • Cleaning and improvements to guttering and aisle roofs.
  • Repairs to the tower section comprising the removal and replacement of decayed timber louvres, restoration to gilded weathervane, patch repairs to lead on cupola and cornice, and redecoration of all painted timber areas.
  • Cleaning of parapet walls and repairs to cracks including repointing.
  • Glazing repairs and replacement of broken lantern glass including full redecoration.
  • Restoration works to windows including Clerestory, South Gallery, Upper Southeast Vestry and Southwest Porch. Works comprised of new putty, rust removal and treatment, redecoration of metal framing, timber repairs and repainting timber work.
  • Localised masonry repairs to stucco render, brickwork repointing, repointing and repainting of plinth.
  • DOFF steam cleaning to full brick elevation.
  • External joinery was rubdown and repainted.
