USL have recently completed a roofing and restoration project at the interesting St Andrew’s Church in Greensted-Juxta-Ongar – known as the oldest ‘Stave Built’ timber building in Europe.

A Quinquennial Inspection Report conducted in 2020 identified that the roof of the chancel required repaired. The nave dates back to between 998 and 1063 AD (albeit only in part, since few sections of its original wooden structure remain).

Our conservation team have undertaken stone cleaning, masonry rebuilding and repairs, leadwork improvements including new replacements and painting with SmartWater (security coding paint), roofing repairs/new tiles, rainwater goods refurbishment, redecoration and window repairs.

Situated deep in the Essex countryside, this Grade I listed building is an ancient place of worship which has the distinction of being the oldest wooden church in the world. The church represents some 1300 years of English history and Christian worship.

USL were pleased to work in partnership with Lime Studio.

This church is supported by the National Churches Trust.
