USL are pleased to share another Stone Conservation & Masonry Repairs Project at Romsey Cemetery for Test Valley Borough Council in Hampshire.  Our restoration team restored and revived the quaint Grade II Italianate-style non-conformist chapel.  This Victorian building is now used as an archaeological store and workspace. The works included sensitive repairs to the south elevation gable which was in need of  rebuilding, repairs to stone dressings, brickwork and refurbishment of existing cast iron.

The restoration project included:

  • Organisation of scaffolding and access towers for elevated platforms.
  • The site was secured at all times with Heras fencing
  • Full inspection and repair survey
  • Preparatory works including stone cleaning to remove organic growth and damaged loose matters.
  • Restoration and stone masonry repairs including stone replacement of defective sections.  Carefully cut out by hand tools.
  • Indent repairs with mortar finish.
  • Masonry and structural repairs to the gable ends including the dismantling and rebuilding of the gable pediment (south and north elevation).
  • Indent repairs under guttering on the west elevation.
  • Further repointing to existing brickwork where required
  • Restoration works to existing cast iron downpipes and guttering including redecoration.
  • Repairs to roof loose and damaged roof slates.
