High-level Nave Masonry Repairs Programme
USL recently completed a nave high level masonry repairs programme at St Stephen’s Church in South Dulwich. The team have been carrying out masonry repairs and stone cleaning.
Partnering with Andy Burrell Architecture, the USL team were pleased to undertake restoration works at the Grade II* church in the Diocese of Southwark. This beautiful neo-gothic church set in Surrey was commissioned from the famous Victorian architect, Sir Charles Barry, to seat a congregation of seven hundred. The church was built by private subscription without endowments, and with the extra gift of a fresco by Sir Edward Poynter.
This comprises repairs and replacements to the Kentish Ragstone of the Nave gable walls combined with an investigation of the nave and chancel roof slating to determine the current condition of the Welsh slates, battens and nails. The church remained in use and open during the period of the works.
