USL was pleased to help repair the South Chapel masonry and glazing at St Mary’s Church in Great Dunmow, Essex.  This lovely Grade I listed church required stone expertise to restore defective stonework to the windows, quoins and string courses.

The works were completed two weeks ahead of schedule including both the external and internal string courses.  Our stonemasons created new stone elements in Hartham Park Bath limestone.

About the Church:

The first church on the present site was probably built about 1250. It was almost entirely rebuilt around the middle of the 14th century in the Decorated style of that period, a task that took about 150 years. Between 1400 and 1450, the Tower was built and soon after this the chancel was widened and the nave arcades rebuilt to allow the addition of the clerestory. Also in the 15th century, the south chapel is now known as St John's chapel.

Again, well done Gerald and sincere thanks from the Fabric committee for steering us through to a successful conclusion. Thanks too to Universal Stone for a well run job, completed on time even though you took on the extra clerestory repair. We look forward to working with you again in the future.
