USL were pleased to work on the restoration, conservation, and stone repairs at Loughton War Memorial on behalf of Loughton Town Council. This memorial commemorates both WWI & II and is designed as a wheel cross on tapering column. The fallen names are recorded on brass plaques fixed to octagonal plinths at base of column.

The memorial was showing signs of visible discolouration from pollution build up. Along with other historical fractures, chips, damage, and repairs. The inscribed letter cut plinth stones were becoming unreadable and carvings became friable due to exposure.

USL team of stone masons carried out the sensitive repairs over a three-week programme, comprising of steam cleaning, repointing, stone repairs, and lettering renewal to bring it back to a more pristine condition.

Works Undertaken

  • Complete cleaning process with DOFF system.
  • All joints and paving repointed.
  • Restoration of treads, realignment, and refixing.
  • Cutting out of damaged stone areas and manufacturing new replacements in Portland stone.
  • Creation of new inscription sections by hand in Portland stone letter cut panels to match existing.
  • Sensitive hand carving on friable panels.
