USL stonemasons were pleased to work in the London Borough of Islington at the Grade II Listed St Andrew’s Church on Thornhill Square. Working in partnership with Art Architects, the team carried out urgently required stone restoration works.

As part of the Barnsbury Conservation Area, this beautiful church is in the midst of the listed houses on Thornhill Crescent and Square (the largest and best preserved early Victorian square in London). Unfortunately, the Church has significant structural issues and is on the Heritage at Risk Register (Category A).

The programme included temporary repair works to the tower, spire and west elevation of the nave to stabilise the structure and reduce the risk of falling masonry.  The team defrassed the spire to remove friable and detached materials as well as localised lime mortar repairs.

As a protective temporary measure, a net around the spire was installed to catch any loose stone that may come away from the spire due to continued weathering.

The stonemasons undertook stonework restoration works to the North Vestry Gable including stone replacements and rebuilding in Ashlar Limestone.
