USL has completed a special lighting installation project in collaboration with Historic England and Colchester Borough Council as a citywide campaign to celebrate and showcase the town’s rich heritage for residents and visitors. Colchester is the oldest recorded town in the British Isles and has a rich archaeological and historical background.
A key part of the ‘Better Colchester’ initiative included two extensive permanent lighting schemes on Colchester Castle (the largest Norman keep in Europe) and lighting along a 250-metre stretch of the Roman Balkerne wall.
The LED colour-changing installation extends to the north and south of Balkerne Gate and will be lit from dusk until 11pm each night, on a permanent basis.

The Better Colchester campaign sets out to make Colchester an even more attractive place to live, work and visit. USL were pleased to work on this special lighting installation project in partnership with Colchester Borough Council.
“We are really committed to celebrating our heritage and this new lighting shows off two of our most prominent pieces of heritage lit up after dark. This is just one of many Better Colchester projects around the town and borough, shining a light on the wonderful assets Colchester has to offer.”
