Grade II listed school in Chigwell Essex receives new roof with over 850m2 of hand made clay tiles.
USL were appointed as principal contractors to carry out the specialist heritage roofing contract as well as associated restoration works at Chigwell School.
Chigwell School is an extensive co-educational day and boarding independent school in Chigwell, in the Epping Forest district of Essex. The school is Grade II listed (C.1620), extended in C18 and C19, constructed in red brick, English bond brickwork and roofed with handmade red clay tiles with a number of external chimney stacks.
The project works incorporated over 850m²of hand-made clay roofing tiles, all stripped and replaced by USL’s team of specialist roofers. Works included: replacement of parapet and valley gutter linings with associated flashings and the installation of SheepWool insulation to roofs, joinery repairs to dormer and sash windows, renewal of rainwater goods and the installation of new rooflights.
Our team of roofers carried out extensive repairs to chimney stacks including replacement brickwork, repointing and Helibar bed joint reinforcement as well as dismantling and reconstruction of stacks. The parapet copings were re-bedded (with all new moulded stonework created by our team of banker masons) and renewed a new patent glazed mono-pitch roof installed.
USL were pleased to carry out all works with minimal disruption to the school, which remained open during the course of the project.
The Governors and staff at Chigwell School would like to put on record their gratitude to Universal Stone for successfully completing the masonry and roofing repair works over the 7 roofs of the Old School. This was a particularly complicated and high profile project and it is testament to Michael, Andy, John and their team that the condition of the finished roofs has exceeded our expectations.
