New Stone Restoration Project at St Mary’s Church in Great Dunmow, Essex

09 October, 2024

USL is pleased to announce another church restoration project in Great Dunmow, Essex.  This time at the lovely Grade I Listed St Mary’s Church.  Our team will be carrying out stone masonry alongside glazing repairs to the South Chapel.

The defective stone will be repaired in and around the windows, quoins and string courses externally and internally. New stone elements will be crafted in Hartham Park Bath limestone.

About the Church:

The first church on the present site was probably built about 1250. It was almost entirely rebuilt around the middle of the 14th century in the Decorated style of that period, a task that took about 150 years. Between 1400 and 1450, the Tower was built and soon after this the chancel was widened and the nave arcades rebuilt to allow the addition of the clerestory. Also in the 15th century, the south chapel is now known as St John's chapel.
