USL is pleased to be part of the exciting revitalisation programme at Grade II* St Mary’s, the heart of Finchley Church End Conservation Area, to maximise use of the site and improve physical, cultural and digital access for the community.
To address current leak issues, USL will be undertaking a full roofing and repair scheme which will include the re-covering of the church roofs with both new slates and reclaimed salvaged slates. The programme will also be introducing VM Zinc roofing to the outer south aisle as an alternative to lead. The nave, north and south aisles will receive new Westmorland slates and the Chancel and Chapel will receive full reclaimed slates from the existing church roof areas.
St Mary-at-Finchley is the oldest building in Finchley. Some people believe that this was a sacred site in Saxon times. Certainly, a church was in existence by the 13th century, when it was known as “The Church of Our Ladye at Fynchesley”.
The nave of the church, including the roof, mostly dates from the 15th century, though the east end of the church (the chancel) was destroyed by bombing in the Second World War and later sympathetically restored
This project has been generously supported by grants The National Lottery Heritage Fund as well as the London Borough of Barnet, National Churches Trust, Wolfson Fabric Repair Fund, Garfield Weston and CSDS Foundation. USL is pleased to work in partnership with Edwards Wilson.
