Apprentice (Stone Masonry & Construction)

Offering: Full-time working/study Apprenticeship to achieve Level 2 Stonemasonry Standard

Working hours: Monday to Friday

Expected duration: 2-year programme of study plus ‘end-point assessment’.

Due to ongoing expansion and new projects, an exciting vacancy has arisen for an apprentice to work in the Sudbury area. The ideal candidate would be conveniently located, to be able to access the live conservation project within the Sudbury area and to spend time training and working within our USL workshop in Battlesbridge, Essex.

USL is pleased to offer the following opportunities for an Apprentice (Stonemasonry)

  • To work and train on prestigious historical buildings and landmarks in the South East.
  • To work closely with a designated mentor and other USL employees on live projects that will help you develop a portfolio of college and workplace projects to reflect your training and study.
  • Restoring, conserving buildings and monuments to their original condition
  • Learn key techniques in stone masonry, restoration, and conservation. As well as develop a better understanding of working with stone as a building material through using a range of architectural components (hand & power tools).
  • Train in aspects related to constructing and repairing stone (specific pathways available including banker, heritage and fixer)
  • Train on Quality Assurance procedures and standards
  • Assist with the organisation of materials, plant and resources.

Topics Covered:

As part of your apprenticeship, you will also learn; health & safety, quality assurance, sustainability and environmental considerations, building regulations, repair and restoration of stone structures and carved work, knowledge of working with listed and historic buildings and structures.

Skills required to succeed in this role:

  • Willingness to learn, act with integrity and work as a team player
  • Good communication skills
  • Numeracy and the ability to understand technical plans
  • Attention to detail
  • Motivated with positive can-do attitude

Entry Requirements:

Apprentices without level 1 English and maths will need to achieve this level and apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to take the tests for this level prior to taking the end-point assessment.

  • Study in partnership with Building Craft College (London E15 1AH)
  • Suggested working hours 07:00 – 16:30, but may require longer hours occasionally as workload & deadlines dictate

Construction Labourers (New Project in Sudbury)

New Conservation / Construction Project in Sudbury

Offering: Full-time working (temporary contract)

Working hours: Monday to Friday (8-hour shifts/day shift)

Expected duration: 40-weeks (subject to probationary period)

Due to ongoing expansion and new projects, a new requirements for Construction Labourers has arisen to work on an exciting conservation/ heritage construction job in the heart of Sudbury (Market Hill CO10) as part of a regeneration project.

The ideal skilled candidate would be conveniently located, to be able to access the live conservation project within the Sudbury area.  Must be able to demonstrate previous on-site construction job experience and registered with CIS (Construction Industry Scheme). The project will be commencing mid-May.

Duties will include (however not limited to):

  • General construction labouring
  • Using hand tools
  • Assisting tradespeople on-site with various duties
  • Moving materials on site
  • Assisting with deliveries / loading
  • Welfare – keeping the site tidy
  • Reporting to USL site management and Contract Management team

Requirements for this role:

  • Registered with CIS (Construction Industry Scheme)
  • PPE
  • Previous experience on construction site
  • Provide references
  • Must be aged 19+
  • Committed to high Health & Safety protocols
  • Must be punctual, dedicated and reliable
  • Motivated with positive can-do attitude
